2Justification
The problem or need
Homs old souq and its covered markets were damaged; hundreds of craft and trade shops closed and their owners moved to the city’s edges.
Today
62% of the shops are closed, the stone roofs of three markets are at risk of collapse, and most of the souq has no working power or drainage.
3Objectives
- Rebuild the souq in phases while keeping its heritage character, and reopen 80% of the shops within three years.
Strategic objectives served
- SO-1.1 — Stimulate growth, restore production and attract investment
- SO-3.1 — Better access to health and education
4Expected benefits
| Kind | Benefit |
|---|---|
| Revenue | Trade activity of about SYP 110M a month back in the souq |
| Productivity | 600 craftspeople back in their workshops |
| Compliance | A registered heritage site protected under the antiquities rules |
